We made shell necklaces from delicate shells, the product of 24 hours of labor. Men carefully, picked the shells, based on color and flawlessness, rejecting those with imperfections. Tiny holes were drilled in each and groups of 5 were connected by a virtually invisible piece of wire. Polynesians are known for habitually wearing a piece of earth. Each color selected for our necklace symbolizes and element of nature: yellow connotes earth with all its flora and fauna; green represents the sea; and white reflects clouds in the sky.
I love my necklace and cherish the experience making it.
Another day, we wove bracelets from traditional fibers and shells.
