Stimulate All Five Senses by Visiting a Market

One of the greatest joys of traveling the world—especially as a solo traveler—is the opportunity to lose yourself in a bustling, colorful marketplace. There is no better way to immerse yourself in the daily rhythm of a culture than to walk among the stalls, soaking in the symphony of sights, sounds, and smells. I’ve visited markets on nearly every continent, and each one tells a different story. You’ll find grandmothers selecting the perfect produce, children begging for a sweet treat, vendors passionately describing their wares, and the scent of fresh spices mingling with sizzling street food. It’s a full-body experience that wakes up your senses and grounds you in the authenticity of place.

When I visit a market, I let myself wander slowly, open to discovery. I taste the local snacks, ask questions about unfamiliar ingredients, and watch the unspoken choreography between vendors and customers. The displays themselves are a visual feast—vivid fruits stacked in perfect pyramids, dried herbs spilling out of handwoven baskets, fish on ice shimmering under the morning sun. Sometimes I buy something small, like a handmade kitchen tool or a local pastry, but often, it’s the energy of the space that stays with me more than any souvenir. These marketplaces are not just places to shop—they are the beating heart of the community.

And if a traditional open-air market isn’t available nearby, don’t overlook the local supermarket. I absolutely love exploring large grocery stores in different countries. They’re quiet cultural classrooms, revealing what people eat, how much they pay, what they value, and how food is presented and preserved. From the bakery section to the instant noodles aisle, you’ll spot everything from regional flavors to beloved brands. Even the carts, checkout lanes, and packaging tell a story. So whether you’re standing in a centuries-old souk or a shiny modern supermarket, take your time. Watch, listen, taste, and learn. You’ll come away with far more than groceries—you’ll leave with a deeper understanding of a place and its people.

Civil rights in Alaska

Here is an excerpt from my travel journal about my visit to Juneau, Alaska, two years ago while on an Alaskan cruise.

From our naturalist presenter Mary Amanda, I learned the treatment of Native Americans in Alaska was comparable to the treatment of Blacks in the lower 48. They were completely excluded from most public spaces, including restaurants, hotels, stores, and movie theaters. She even showed us signs that said "no Natives; no dogs." A brave educated and accomplished woman, Elizabeth Peratrovich,  member of the Tlingit nation, championed the cause of equality and invested her energy and resources to help pass civil rights legislation for Native Americans in 1945, 20 years before the lower 48 decided to do the right thing and past civil rights laws. She fought against powerful well-connected voraciously bigoted white supremacists in the legislature and triumphed after more than one try.

These individuals had inhabited the land long before the arrival of Russians and Americans, and yet they had to fight for equal treatment under the law.

———-

If Alaska had been granted statehood in 1945, it is likely that Native Americans would have faced a further 20-year delay in attaining civil rights within their own nation.

Please Research and Plan Your Trip!

The Importance of Travel Planning: Seven Benefits to Planning for a Successful Solo Trip

Introduction:

Embarking on your first solo trip can be an exhilarating adventure, opening doors to new experiences and self-discovery. To ensure a smooth and memorable journey, having a well-thought-out travel plan is crucial. In this article, we will explore seven reasons why having a travel plan is so important for anyone venturing out on their first solo trip, highlighting the numerous benefits that come with effective travel planning.

1. Safety and Security:

Planning your itinerary in advance enables you to make informed decisions about your destinations and accommodations, taking into account safety concerns. Researching local customs, laws, and potential risks helps you stay prepared and avoid unnecessary complications. Additionally, sharing your travel plans with a trusted friend or family member enhances your personal safety by ensuring someone knows your whereabouts.

2. Efficient Time Management:

Travel planning allows you to optimize your time and make the most of your journey. By outlining key attractions and activities you wish to experience, you can create a realistic schedule and allocate time accordingly. This way, you won't miss out on must-see sights or find yourself rushing through destinations due to inadequate time allocation.

3. Budgeting and Cost Efficiency:

One of the significant advantages of travel planning is the ability to manage your finances effectively. Researching and estimating the costs of transportation, accommodation, meals, and activities in advance empowers you to set a realistic budget. By doing so, you can avoid overspending, identify potential areas to save money, and ensure a stress-free financial experience during your trip.

4. Enhanced Exploration:

Travel planning enables you to delve deeper into your chosen destinations. By researching attractions, landmarks, local traditions, and hidden gems, you can craft an itinerary that encompasses both popular tourist spots and off-the-beaten-path experiences. This meticulous planning allows you to immerse yourself in the culture, history, and beauty of each place you visit, creating a truly enriching solo travel experience.

5. Flexibility and Adaptability:

While having a travel plan is essential, it is equally crucial to maintain flexibility during your solo trip. Unexpected events or opportunities may arise, and having a well-structured plan allows you to adapt and make necessary adjustments without feeling overwhelmed. Flexibility within your travel plan ensures you have the freedom to seize spontaneous moments and make the most of unexpected discoveries along the way.

6. Peace of Mind:

Having a travel plan offers peace of mind and reduces unnecessary stress. By addressing logistical concerns such as transportation, accommodation, and visas in advance, you can minimize uncertainties and focus on enjoying your solo adventure. Knowing that you have prepared for various contingencies provides a sense of security, allowing you to relax and fully immerse yourself in the joys of exploring new horizons.

7. Personal Growth and Confidence:

Embarking on a solo trip requires stepping outside your comfort zone, fostering personal growth and self-confidence. The process of creating and executing a travel plan empowers you to take charge of your journey, make independent decisions, and overcome challenges along the way. As you navigate unfamiliar territories and connect with people from diverse backgrounds, your confidence and resilience will grow, leaving you with lasting memories and a newfound sense of empowerment.

Conclusion:

For those embarking on their first solo trip, having a well-structured travel plan is of utmost importance. From ensuring safety and security to efficient time management, budgeting, and enhancing exploration, travel planning offers numerous benefits. It provides a solid foundation for a successful and memorable journey, allowing you to embrace the excitement and freedom of solo travel while minimizing unnecessary stress. So, take the time to plan, prepare, and embark on your adventure with confidence, knowing that you have set the stage for an incredible experience.

Coping with Unexpected Travel Delays

Coping with Unexpected Travel Delays: A Guide to Staying Prepared

Traveling to far-off destinations can be an exhilarating experience, filled with anticipation and excitement. However, the reality is that unforeseen travel delays can occasionally disrupt even the most meticulously planned itineraries.

Just recently, a seasoned traveler friend of mine encountered an unexpected series of travel setbacks while en route to Istanbul. After flying from The US to Toronto, he was taken aback to discover that his flight to Istanbul had been abruptly canceled. This left him with no choice but to endure an overnight stay at the Toronto airport before catching an early flight to New York—In all, and 11-hour wait. From there, he will finally board a flight to Istanbul, his desired destination.

This firsthand account highlights the importance of preparedness and adaptability while traveling. Even with careful planning, situations beyond our control can arise, testing our patience and resilience. By sharing this experience, we hope to provide valuable insights and practical advice for travelers facing unexpected travel delays. Whether you're a seasoned explorer or embarking on your first adventure, being equipped with the right mindset and essential items can help you navigate through these challenges more effectively, ensuring a smoother travel experience overall.

Essential Items to Bring for Unexpected Travel Disruptions

Here are some recommended items to consider including in your travel bag to help you navigate through such situations.

1. Travel Documents:

Ensure you have all necessary travel documents organized and easily accessible. This includes your passport, visas, boarding passes, hotel reservations, and any other relevant documents. Keeping digital copies on your phone or in cloud storage can serve as a backup.

2. Comfort Essentials:

a) Neck Pillow and Blanket: A travel pillow and a lightweight blanket can provide much-needed comfort during long layovers or unexpected overnight stays.

b) Eye Mask and Earplugs: These can help create a sleep-friendly environment, allowing you to rest in noisy or brightly lit areas.

c) Comfortable Clothing: Pack a change of comfortable clothes, such as loose-fitting clothing and warm layers, suitable for various weather conditions.

3. Entertainment and Productivity:

a) Books, e-books, or E-readers: Having a captivating book or e-reader can keep you entertained during extended waiting periods.

b) Portable Chargers and Power Banks: Keep your electronic devices charged with portable chargers to stay connected and entertained.

c) Headphones: A good pair of headphones can be your best companion, allowing you to enjoy music, podcasts, or watch movies without disturbing others.

4. Snacks and Hydration:

a) Non-perishable Snacks: Carry some healthy, non-perishable snacks like granola bars, nuts, or dried fruits to keep hunger at bay.

b) Empty Water Bottle: Stay hydrated by bringing an empty water bottle to fill up after passing through security checkpoints. Some airports have water filling stations.

5. Toiletries and Personal Care:

a) Travel-sized Toiletries: Pack travel-sized toiletries like toothpaste, toothbrush, hand sanitizer, and wet wipes to stay refreshed.

b) Medications: If you have any essential medications, carry them in your carry-on bag to ensure they are easily accessible.

6. Miscellaneous:

a) Travel Adapter and Charging Cables: Don't forget to bring a universal travel adapter and charging cables for your electronic devices.

b) Cash and Credit Cards: Keep some local currency and backup credit cards in case of emergencies or unforeseen circumstances.

Conclusion:

While travel disruptions can be frustrating, being prepared with essential items can significantly improve your experience during unexpected situations. Remember to plan ahead, pack accordingly, and stay flexible in case your travel plans change. By having these essential items with you, you'll be better equipped to navigate through any unforeseen circumstances, ensuring a smoother and more comfortable travel experience.

Here is the note that I wrote to my friend:

Are you new to international travel but have a dream destination in mind?

—-Are you dreaming of visiting an ideal destination that has always captured your imagination?

—-If you're new to international travel and feel a bit uneasy about venturing beyond your home country, don't worry! Planning a trip can be overwhelming, especially when it comes to a foreign destination.

—-Do you find yourself hesitant to rely solely on your own planning skills?

Rest assured, there are resources available to help you navigate the process and ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

To make your visit more enjoyable and well-informed, I suggest the following steps:

1. Begin by exploring your local library or bookstore to gather valuable insights about the places you plan to visit. Look for books, travel guides, and resources that cover popular attractions, local history, cuisine, customs, transportation options, and more.

2. Take the time to study local maps, including metro maps if applicable, to familiarize yourself with the layout of the destinations you'll be exploring. Understanding the geography will help you navigate and plan your itinerary more efficiently.

3. Once you've conducted your research and gained a better understanding of your desired destinations, consider the tours that align with your interests. Many hotels offer tour booking services, allowing you to conveniently reserve tours that catch your attention. Additionally, you can search for free walking tours or popular local tours online, which can range from a few hours to a full day.

4. I emphasize the importance of conducting thorough research in advance. The more knowledgeable you are about the attractions, logistics, and local customs, the more confident and comfortable you will feel during your visit to dream destination.

Remember to tailor your plans according to your specific interests and preferences. Exploring your destinations can be an incredibly rich experience, and adequate preparation will enhance your journey.

I find the trip planning to be almost as fun as the actual trip.

Dolls from around the world

A friend of mine just posted a doll given to her by a friend in Turkey.

She inspired me to pull out some of my girls from places such as Indonesia, Russia, China, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Greece and more. I especially love my Peruvian girl holding her llama.

Skagway, Alaska

 Today in Skagway Alaska.

As we sailed into the port of Skagway on this cool, crisp morning, the scenery took my breath away.  The striking landscape is picture postcard perfect!! With sweeping stunning views of the snow capped mountains reflecting in the tranquil crystal clear sea, mother nature never disappoints here.

Skagway rose to fame after the 1896 discovery of gold in the Klondike and it served as a gateway for prospectors during the Gold Rush. Within a three  month period, the population soared from 60 to 20,000 people in search of making a fortune in gold. Few succeeded under the harsh environmental conditions and in a climate of fierce competition among tens of thousands of gold seekers.

The lawless town attracted fortune seekers, con artists, saloon keepers gambling houses, dance halls, hustlers, and brothels. By the spring of 1898, the town was labeled “little better than a hell on earth.”

Here is an interesting quote: “miners have moiled for gold in the Yukon for many centuries but the Klondike Gold Rush was a particularly strange and intense period of history. Within a decade, the towns of Skagway, Dyea, and Dawson City appeared out of nowhere, mushroomed to accommodate tens of thousands of people, and just vanished again. Although only a few people found enough gold even to pay for their trip, the Alaskan gold rush left an indelible mark on  nations imagination.

Originally settled by the Tlingit people, Skagway is a small town with a frontier motif and a population of only 1000 people.

As in many Alaskan port cities, much of the town shuts down after the tourism season ends. I spoke with many locals who are amazed that the Alaska cruise season continues to be extended beyond September. Today, it reached a high of 48°, on a clear sunny first Tuesday in October.

I strolled throughout the downtown area after taking the scenic 25-minute walk into town. Our walk was disrupted as we had to wait at least 20 minutes while the Famous White Pass railway train made a long stop on the tracks that bisect the city.

I was awe-inspired by the sense of serenity I felt strolling around this lovely town.

Please forgive any errors. I will edit this after I return home.
