Today is April 11, 1912.
I am in the port of Queenstown (Cobh), Ireland.
My name is Margaret Devaney. I am 20 years old and I am traveling alone in third class. I paid the equivalent of $40 or $640 in 2019 currency.
We took a 40-minute tender to meet the ship. 123 three of us boarded here in Ireland. We were the last to board this lovely ship. It will take 6 1/2 days to travel to New York. My room has running water and electricity!!!!!! WOW! We get breakfast dinner and tea each day. I have 3 roommates.
There are 100 single cabins in First Class—I wish I were in one. They have 10 courses at their dinner. The first class folks travel with valets, maids, and other servants.
They have a full gymnasium, a heated pool, and a Turkish bath. There are three electric elevators for first class passengers and one for second class. We must take the stairs. There are two tiny community rooms for all 700 of us third class passengers. I hope I make it big in America!
Aftermath:
Margaret survived!
The Titanic set sail from Southampton on April 10, 1912. Eight passengers disembarked in Queens town/ Cobh before it left for America. This possibly saved their lives.
It sank on April 15, 1912.
