American credit card use unauthorized in Cuba

Prior to all travel abroad, I always notify my credit card and ATM companies of my upcoming travel destinations and dates. As I attempted to notify them of my upcoming travel to Cuba, I discovered it is so unlawful to use American credit cards in Cuba, that such transactions are completely unauthorized by the bank.
