Maori and English. The government has invested in teaching and preserving the Maori language which is not spoken at home.

Maori (10%)and European (known as Pakeha) (75%). 5% are Pacific Islanders.

Symbols and icons that represent national identity such as the haka dance performed by the All Blacks rugby team, Buzzy Bee toys, Paua shell, L&P soft drink and more.
What is Maori art?
The Maori were the original Polynesian inhabitants (traced back to Taiwan) living in NZ before the Europeans arrived. Traditional carvings served as historical records of the people, places, values, and events of the Maori. Most common are masks, wood carvings, paintings, kapa haka (performing arts of opera, dance, theatre) and intricate tattoos
There are 46 tribes with different dialects.
The government invests $$500 million in education and preservation of the Maori culture.
Why are some birds flightless birds?
There were no animal predators prior to the arrival of the Polynesians and Europeans so the birds had no need to flee danger.
We visited ports on 2 islands:
North: Waitangi
South: Auckland and Picton
They are very strict in New Zealand in customs about bringing in any items including fruits, vegetables, grains, meats, or even footwear with certain seeds attached. They had dog sniffing us in Auckland.
