The Maori were the original Polynesian inhabitants (traced back to Taiwan) living in NZ before the Europeans arrived. Traditional carvings served as historical records of the people, places, values, and events of the Maori. Most common are masks, wood carvings, paintings, kapa haka (performing arts of opera, dance, theatre) and intricate tattoos

Why are some birds flightless birds?
There were no animal predators prior to the arrival of the Polynesians and Europeans so the birds had no need to flee danger.

They are very strict in New Zealand in customs about bringing in any items including fruits, vegetables, grains, meats, or even footwear with certain seeds attached. They had dog sniffing us in Auckland.
