Today we visited Cadiz, Spain, one of the oldest cities in Europe dating back to over 1000 BC. It was also the first seat of government and commercial powerhouse of Andalucia.
Uniquely, it is a peninsular city surrounded approximately 300° by water.
Before Cadiz became Spanish, it was home to several legendary civilizations, including the Phoenicians, Greece, Romans, and finally the Moors.
Evidence of each society can be seen through Cadiz’ stunning Moorish architecture, amazing Pedestrian-only streets, grand squares, robust fortress walls, lively varied restaurants, and vibrant atmosphere.
Everywhere you look you see remnants of this melting pot of Andalusia culture
I decided to take the famous self-guided Cadiz walking tours, that allowed me to stroll around the sturdy outer defense walls of the city, explore all the main plazas, admire the grand churches and castle remains, and enjoy the picturesque botanical gardens, beaches, and parks. Because the city is surrounded by water, the stunning views of the sea are everywhere.
The last time I was here I took the hour and a half long trip to visit the city of Seville, one of the former homes of the Spanish royal family.
The weather was perfect around 70° and sunny.
